Hi friends! I am blogging over at Pretty Well Organized this morning, sharing all of the DIY details on how we created a countertop and shelving in our laundry room for under $65! When we first moved in to our home, I really wanted to install a Formica countertop in our laundry closet with cabinets above, but with all of the other new expenses - including the cost of a brand new washer and dryer - there just wasn't any extra money in the budget. Nonetheless, I still needed to find a way to ... View the Post
{blog conference} An Introvert’s Guide to Haven
It's already been over a week since I returned from Haven Conference, and it seems that everyone else in Blogland has posted their recaps, so I was struggling with what I could add that hadn't already been said about this awesome conference. But then as I was sitting around and chatting with the lovely ladies in my book club about our most recent read, "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking" by Susan Cain, and as they were asking me about my first ever blogging ... How to Clean a Chalkboard Wall to Get It Back to Black
Ever since we first painted the magnetic chalkboard wall in our kitchen, I have been on a mission to figure out how to get it clean. I mean really clean... as in back to the way it looked when it was new. Back to black! The constant white/gray haze on the wall drove me crazy! Because our chalkboard wall reaches all the way to the ceiling, we never draw or write on the top of it, meaning that the wall isn't even consistently grey. Instead it is nice and clean on the top - and progressively ... View the Post
{home tour} Our Modern Kitchen
UPDATE: Thanks for stopping by to see our kitchen. The photos below are a couple of years old, so if you want to see some more updated photos of the kitchen, you'll find them in these seasonal home tours: It's home tour time! Last week I kicked off our home tour by showing you the entire second level, including the nursery, our toddler's "big boy room," our guest room and guest bath, and our laundry closet. Today we are moving things down to the first floor for a tour of the kitchen. ... View the Post
{shopping for style} 15 Modern Bar Stools Under $200 & the Ones We Picked For Our Kitchen
Our style is pretty modern {or more specifically, modern metro with a touch of urban funk}. I say "our" because I am fortunate that Scott and I have very similar taste! But having a modern aesthetic can be challenging at times. It is sometimes frustrating to walk through store after store seeing more traditional furniture options that just don't feel like us, and as a result, we often end up doing a lot of our shopping online. It also seems that furniture with modern lines is often ... View the Post
An Anniversary Flashback to Our Black, White & Blue Wedding
Today Scott and I are celebrating our seven year anniversary! I just returned from the Haven conference, and I should be unpacking and doing laundry, but instead I've been looking back at the photos from our wedding day and reminiscing! And since I love to see other people's wedding photos, I thought maybe you would like to see some of my favorite photos from our big day! {All photos by BLF Photography} Right after we got engaged, we began looking for wedding venues. We both love the city, ... View the Post
Quick and Cute Recipe Box Dividers
Hello from Haven! I arrived in Atlanta yesterday afternoon and I’m already having a great time meeting so many wonderful ladies! I have a busy conference schedule today, but didn’t want to miss out on Five Minute Friday, so I have a quick but cute project to share with you this morning. A couple of weekends ago I hosted a “Stock the Kitchen” themed wedding shower for my soon to be sister-in-law. My brother-in-law and his fiancé love to cook, and since the guest list included all of the ... View the Post
{home tour} Come On In…Let Me Show You Our Second Level!
As you read this, I am on a plane bound for the Haven Conference! But while I'm headed for Atlanta, I wanted to invite you to a little open house here in Denver... For months the "Home Tour" page of my blog has promised to be "coming soon"...so I thought it was about time I finally get my act together and show you around. Our house is spread over three floors and a finished basement, so I thought I'd break the tour down a bit, and I am starting today with the second level. All of the photos you ... View the Post
{blog upgrades} Getting Haven Ready!
If you follow me on social media, then you are going to be hearing and seeing a lot about Haven throughout this weekend, so I thought I'd fill you in really quickly on what it's all about. Haven is a conference for home/design/DIY bloggers, and my awesome husband purchased one of the highly-sought-after conference tickets as my birthday present! On Thursday I'll be hopping on a plane to Atlanta where I'll get to spend the weekend gathering with other design and DIY lovers, listening to speakers ... View the Post
Labeling Trash, Recycling & Compost Bins
Right after we moved into our house we swapped out the single pull out trash can in the kitchen for a double pull-out system that allows us to have both trash and recycling hidden within a single cabinet. Recently, Denver began a new compost program and we are excited to be participating, but this mean adding one more trash can. Since we had no space for an additional can within a cabinet or under the kitchen sink, we opted for a stainless steel flip-top can at the end of our counter. This ... View the Post
DIY Alphabet Magnets that Actually Stick to Magnetic Primer
Yesterday I told you about the magnetic chalkboard wall that we created in our kitchen, and I gave you my not-so-glowing review of magnetic primer. While magnetic primer might not be strong enough for many uses, the only use I was specifically interested was allowing my boys to play with, and learn from, alphabet magnets. As I shared yesterday, I purchased some lightweight, plastic alphabet magnets from the toy store, but the magnets were not strong enough and they fell right to the ... View the Post
How to Create a Magnetic Chalkboard Wall
I have loved chalkboards ever since I was a kid. It was always such a special treat anytime I had an opportunity to doodle on the board after school! So several years ago when I became aware that you could buy chalkboard paint for your home, I knew that my kids would some day have their very own chalkboard to doodle on! And then I learned about magnetic primer, and well...that sealed the deal! I realize that chalkboard walls are becoming quite common, but I always enjoy seeing how people ... View the Post
