Is anyone else dreaming of a white Christmas? What about an orange and white Christmas?! It’s definitely not a traditional color combo for the holidays, but then again, I’ve never been accused of being traditional.
Today I’m teaming up with some of my favorite modern and eclectic home decor bloggers for the Winter Eclectic Home Tour, hosted by Domicile 37. Last week, I gave you a peek at the red and teal decor on our main level, but for today’s tour, I’m thrilled to show you how a color traditional associated with Halloween can make for a very fun twist on Christmas decor!
Before we had kids, I never decorated for Christmas in the basement. But once the kids came along, we wanted a larger tree and the basement seemed like the logical location because there was plenty of room, and because it’s where we spend most of our time as a family. Figuring out how to combine Christmas with our orange and gray decor – especially the orange wall above our fireplace – had me stumped at first, but then I realized that all I could easily go all white!
As an added challenge, I wanted all of our Christmas decor in the basement to be kid-friendly, and it was especially important to me that our Christmas tree be a total hands on experience for the kids.
We decided to skip the breakable glass ornaments, and opted instead for felt and knit. You can read all about the tree and our kid-safe ornaments if you are interested, but for now, let me just show you how pretty it is!
The basement family room is everyone’s favorite place to hang out, and the site of frequent movie nights, especially at Christmas time!
Our stockings are, of course, hung by the chimney with care, and I created glittery monogram pins so we know whose is whose. All four monogram pins cost me just $6 to make!
A few years ago, I made six DIY Christmas trees – three cones that I covered in different textures, and three flat triangles that I painted. A few weeks ago I was shopping at Home Goods when I came across a couple of Issac Mizrahi trees that I couldn’t pass up – one is a solid triangular piece of stone, and the other looks like two overlapping marble trees. I knew they’d make the perfect additions to my collection, but eight trees on the mantle was just two many, so I relocated my two gray painted trees upstairs, leaving the basement mantle looking like snowy perfection in all white.
As much as I love these trees, my favorite part of the mantle is my new porcelain cityscape {affiliate link}. I came across these fabulous tea light buildings at West Elm, and being a city girl, I had to have them.
On the opposite end of the basement is the boys play area. Each year, I string up my DIY reusable chalkboard pennant banner with a message to remind the kids that Santa is making his list and checking it twice!
The dollhouse below the banner was a Christmas gift that I made for the boys two years ago. I took an off-the-shelf dollhouse and transformed it into a mini-replica of our home. I stained the wood, painted and “wallpapered’ the walls, and even created felt rugs to match the rugs in our house. If you haven’t seen the dollhouse up close, it’s definitely worth a look {and if you need a last minute Christmas idea that will wow the kids – the transformation only took me a couple of days}!
Even the dollhouse got a little Christmas decor with the addition of a mini bottle brush Christmas tree.
Thanks so much for taking the time to visit part two of my Christmas home tour!
Since Christmas trees are always most beautiful at night, I’ll leave you with this photo…
Now grab your cup of hot chocolate and get comfortable, because there are many more eclectic winter home tours to visit! Everyone one of these gals has such a unique and fun take on their seasonal decor, and I know you’re going to want to check out them all out!
